The mortar socket is given added strength by its shape, and by the "fins" buttressing the sides. Pure conjecture, but the rusty attachment on the front was probably the mortar's spring loaded actuator. A pin through the base attached to a wire held it in place, and was released when the wire was pulled firing the mortar.
