The former St Joseph’s Convent of Mercy, at the corner of Sussex Place and Joy Street, was completed in 1880 to a design by Alexander McAlister. Part of the cost of construction came from the estate of the noted architect Timothy Hevey who died shortly after completion. In more recent times used as the presbytery J3473 : The Presbytery of St Malachy's Church, Alfred Street of St Malachy’s church Link nearby.
The building is currently (January 2015) offered for sale. The agents’ description includes “The property lies within the Linen Conservation and has a B1 listing – Ref 26/30/24. Planning consent has been granted for an extension of the property into the yard. The proposed new property will have its own access from Joy Street but has been designed to connect and join the annex of the subject property. The building has been designed over ground and four upper floors and has an estimated net internal area of 4,000 Sq.Ft. Ref: Z/2009/0527/F”.
There is the following application for planning permission: “30/04/2015 LA04/2015/0224/F The former St. Malachy's Convent of Mercy Sussex Place and lands adjacent to Hamilton House 3 Joy Street Belfast BT2 8LE Retention, conversion and extension of former convent house for 14 one bedroom and 2 two bedroom apartments (16 units in total)”.
