Looking down into the gun pit, the small recess in the scrub that can be seen directly behind the inner enclosure, was where compressed air to clear the gun barrel between rounds was generated. For this purpose a diesel driven hydraulic pump and compressor was used to provide both electrical power and compressed air from the attached building behind.
