Auxiliary Unit Operational Base: DoB ID: S0008521
During WWII Great Britain was the only country to have had an organised resistance movement in place prior to an invasion or occupation. This highly secret organisation consisted of small groups of local men who were formed into units known as 'Auxiliaries'. During an invasion they would have immediately gone to ground in specially prepared hideouts to remain hidden until the invasion forces had passed them by. They would have then emerged to create havoc and mayhem on the enemy with weapons and explosives held in store in the hides. Their chances of survival were pretty slim, they knew that capture, torture, and eventual execution probably awaited them.
Dorset had about 32 'hides' or Operational Bases that were built mainly by the Pioneer Corps of the Royal Engineers. This one survives in Norden Woods at Creech Barrow, and although its two main underground bunkers have long since collapsed, the remains of much of the original structure can still be seen. The view here is of the remains of the main chamber - note the ventilation pipe on the right in the ferns.
