St Mary's tower
Pevsner notes that the battlements of this Perpendicular tower are decorated with stone carving rather than flushwork which is more usual in these parts. From the unusually complete parish records at Cratfield we know that this work was carried out in 1547 and financed out of the sale of "sensors, crwetes and such like trash ... chalices ... and all such peltrie of the pope's sinful service" cast out at the accession of Edward VI.
There are six bells within the tower and until the 1960s the
TM3174 : Cratfield church clock struck the hours on the ancient sacring bell from around 1400 which was housed in a cupola within the battlements.
