Holywell Level
The Holywell Level of the South Quarry. On the right is a protective bund designed to restrain vehicles from the drop to the next level (in historic working with railways which were self-guiding, this was not required, and modern safety principles had not been invented). To the left are rock traps which retain material collapsing from unstable faces. It is not therefore immediately apparent how high and repetitive the quarry levels are, nor where the void of the quarry is! Tipped material buttresses the south-eastern side of the quarry, and the heap of weathered overburden has a markedly different colour in the distance.
