Imber: an eastward view from the Baptist churchyard
Imber village was requisitioned by the Army in December 1943, to allow the military firing ranges to include this remaining enclave of Salisbury Plain. Although supposedly a temporary arrangement, the residents were never allowed to return and the village now consists of only a handful of original buildings, all in a derelict state.
The path up to the Baptist Chapel churchyard is flanked by red tape and warning signs, such as those in the picture. The background buildings are not original village houses; they are fake houses erected by the military as target practice, so in fact they have never been more complete than as they are seen now.
