View in Barrack Square towards the old gatehouse, built in 1826 and in 1992 converted into a prison museum which closed in 1998. In the background is Shire Hall which fronts onto Westgate Street and on the left is the Shire Hall Quayside Wing. Here in Barrack Square on the morning of 31st May 1922 a crowd of 1000 waited to hear of the execution of Major Herbert Rowse Armstrong, the Hay on Wye poisoner, said to be the only solicitor to be hanged for murder. Time photo taken 3.34 pm BST (British Summer Time).
