North Eastern Railway fireman Edward Booth was killed when his train crashed at Ulleskelf station (S W of York) on 24 November 1906 after passing a signal set at danger in fog. The accident led to the introduction of automatic safety equipment, invented by Vincent Raven of the N.E.R., to prevent all trains passing signals at danger. LinkExternal link
