NS3481 : The Deceiver

taken 7 years ago, near to Colgrain, Argyll And Bute, Scotland

The Deceiver
The Deceiver
(Laccaria laccata)

This species was abundant beside a NS3481 : Forestry track. The group shown here was in the shade of the woods, on the slope just to the west of the track.

The appearance of this species is notoriously variable: specimens vary in colour and in form; in part, form depends on age, and colour both on age and on recent weather, but the degree of variation goes beyond what is caused by these factors. The resulting confusion accounts for the species' common name.

This picture was taken mainly to provide a point of comparison with NS3984 : Amethyst Deceiver, a similar but vividly-coloured species which I would photograph a few days later.
