Arrival at Edinburgh Waverley
Arrival at Edinburgh Waverley
The 'Highland Chieftain' from Inverness having arrived some 50 mins late. The problem was caused by the dreaded 'leaves on the line' on the long climb out of Inverness. The train ran very slowly on the climb and finally ground to a halt in the vicinity of Smithton. It was announced that it might be necessary to return to Inverness to 'have another run at it'. Fortunately, the driver was of the 'old school' and found some sand which he placed on the track for some distance ahead. This enabled the train to gain adhesion and eventually make headway. All credit to him!
