SU1482 : Wilts & Berks Canal adjacent to Mattocks Path, East Wichel, Wichelstowe, Swindon
taken 7 years ago, near to Wroughton, Swindon, England
A major effort is being made to restore the Wilts & Berks Canal. In the Swindon area the original route ran right through the town centre with a branch known as the North Wilts Canal going off to meet the Thames & Severn Canal at Latton. The canal was officially abandoned over one hundred years ago in 1914. Today much of the canal's former route in Swindon has been built over and it is not really feasible to attempt to thread the canal through the central area. Instead it is hoped a new route can be created looping around the southern and eastern sides of the town. As part of this scheme a section has already been built in the Wichelstowe area. On the eastern side of the town the new route will rejoin the original route at Acorn Bridge on the A420 road near Shrivenham.
