The first railway at Grosmont opened in 1836 was a horse drawn tramway and passed through this tunnel. Now a pedestrian subway, the tunnel became obsolete circa 1847 when superseded by a steam tunnel built alongside. The tunnel is listed, grade II*, with details at:
