TG3202 : A full cold moon
taken 6 years ago, near to Hellington, Norfolk, England
A full cold moon
This is the first and only supermoon of the year 2017, and because it coincides with a full moon it appears bigger and brighter than usual. The moon orbits around 238,000 miles away from Earth, but occasionally it gets much closer, and on 3rd December 2017 it was just 222,135 miles distant. December’s full moon is traditionally known as the "Full Cold Moon". Two more such moons can be seen on the 2nd and 31st January 2018.
In 2016, the moon had made its closest approach to our planet since 1948. Next time it will come that close again will be on 25 November 2034.
