Gt Victoria Street bus station, Belfast
Gt Victoria Street station (usually the “GNR”) opened in 1848. In 1964, with the closure of the ex-GNR(I) lines to Londonderry and Warrenpoint, it lost platforms 5 and 6 to the adjacent bus station. In 1970 most of the building was demolished to make way for the Europa Hotel. What remained suffered several bomb attacks. In 1974 it closed completely (it re-opened in 1995) and part was included in the bus station. The 17.30 Belfast – London express is leaving. Cross-Channel passengers had the advantage of boarding under what remained of the former train shed. Local travellers boarded in the elements. A grim and dingy hole – I used it for 16 years. Now replaced by a proper bus station renamed the “Europa Buscentre”.
