taken 6 years ago, near to Kilnave, Islay, Argyll And Bute, Scotland
The remains of an 8th century chapel, cross and burial ground on a raised beach on the west side of Loch Gruinart. Link. The chapel has no roof, but some beautiful stonework, especially at the doorway and east gable window, and on the south wall. The chapel supports a luxuriant growth of lichens. There are old and modern memorials, including a Commonwealth War Grave, and two crosses. There is also an old gravestone which has the appearance of being wood NR2871 : Ancient Wooden Grave-Marker, and I thought it remarkable that wood would last so long, but I tested it carefully and it was crystalline, so I think it was finely grained stone.
