The smoothing of the base of these stones is intriguing. I have a theory that sheep will have rubbed themselves against these stones for hundreds of years thus smoothing and tapering the shapes of these stones. I also think that where you find single stones set up, they were placed there as cattle and sheep rubs, so that the animals could remove ticks and other parasitic insects by rubbing against the stones.
