Caerlaverock's Nithsdale Lodgings
Caerlaverock's Nithsdale Lodgings
During the early 17th century, the 10th Lord Maxwell added the prestigious ranges known as the Nithsdale Lodgings. Completed in 1634, this development provided luxury accommodation for the family and reminded their important guests of the Maxwells’ power and wealth. Each window in the block is capped by an intricate carving of a classical scene. NY0265 : Neptune In His Chariot & NY0265 : Corpse of Patroclus.
However, in 1640, Caerlaverock suffered its final siege and capture by the Protestant Covenanter army. After the demolition of the south wall and tower, the castle was finally abandoned.
