Helical structure of Sweet Chestnut tree grain revealed
Strictly speaking it's probably a section of a conical helix since tree trunks taper. Apparently this phenomenon isn't confined to Chestnut trees; Scots Pine and Ponderosa Pine can also grow like this. Does the helix climb in a clockwise direction in the southern hemisphere?
