This small pond was well-known to local children in bygone years. One of them seems to be still here!
Myreside Pond

This out-of-the-way pond was known by generations of local children as 'Scabanory', a name by which it is still known by most local people today. In fact if you mention Myreside Pond the chances are that you will be greeted with blank looks but call it 'Scabanory' and recognition is instant. In bygone days this pond held an almost irresistible attraction to children with its abundant supply of tadpoles, newts, frogs and minnows and it was the subject of rumours (legends almost) such as the loss of a horse, cart and driver who fell into the pond or that it was bottomless and went all the way to China! These stories were no doubt concocted by anxious parents in an attempt to keep their children away from what was a potentially dangerous water hazard. Although the pond is small it contains a healthy population of roach up to about two pounds weight and attracts small waterfowl. Kingfishers have been seen on the pond. An alternative name for this pond is 'Scabbie Norrie' which is probably a childish corruption of 'Scabanory'.
