Milestone 18 at Gormanston
Milestone 18 at Gormanston
Milestone 18 on the turnpike road from Dublin to Drogheda, later the N1 and now called the R132. It is shown on the west side of the road at this location in Taylor and Skinner's book 'Maps of the Roads of Ireland' published in 1778. It now faces the wrong way (i.e. west) with the front reading '18', the north side 'DROGHEDA 5' and the south side 'MAN OF WAR 5'. The present road, visible at right, is a 20th-century realignment; the original road is directly under and to the left (east) of the milestone. The milestone was buried for some years but was unearthed again during installation of the gas pipeline from Gormanston to N. Ireland which crosses the road at this point.
