Several railway lines, active and closed can be seen in this view. The former Glasgow & Kilmarnock Joint Railway line from Glasgow to Kilmarnock is still in use. It can be seen running from the lower right corner to the top centre of the photo. The disused line running from the lower right corner to the top right corner is the former Glasgow to Ardrossan Montgomerie Pier line which was operated by the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway Company. The line in the lower left corner is still in place but has been disused since the 1980s. It ran to Giffen, Kilbirnie and Beith. Lugton was served by two stations (one on each line) for several years.
