A street, developed before 1833 and originally known as “Souter’s Row” or “Sooty Row” and much later in that century as “West Street”. It runs from Main Street to the Southwell Road. Part of the northern side is now (August 2012) mainly vacant and semi-derelict houses and former shops. “Souter” is the Scots/Ulster Scots for shoemaker as in Souter Johnnie NS2307 : Souter Johnnie's Cottage with whom Rabbie Burns supped.
