Some temporary wooden grave markers were returned to families after the Great War and can be found in local churches and museums. The 'Returned from the Front' project has a searchable database Link















This German example from 1914 in Oxfordshire marked the grave of one of the Old Contemptibles who died at Le Cateau in the one of the first engagements on the Western Front.
