'Cheadle remembers the War Horse'

In August 1914 requisitioned horses were gathered in the Market Square to be handed over to the military. The 'Cheadle Remembers the War Horse' event in August 2015 brought together local horses and owners to recreate a photograph.

Mud Soldier

The Mud Soldier sculpture was created from a composite of Passchendaele mud and sand by Belgian twin sister artists Damian and Killian Van Der Velden. Over four days, the sculpture in Trafalgar Square will be largely washed away by rainfall.

The Apedale Railway ran events in 2014, 2016 and 2018 highlighting the role of light railways in supplying the front lines on the Western Front.

Plans for conversion of carriages had been prepared prior to the outbreak of war for 12 trains for use on the home front with the first complete train delivered within three weeks. Each train could normally accommodate up to 400 patients attended by three nurses, three medical officers and orderlies. During the early days of the Battle of the Somme nearly 33000 wounded soldiers were evacuated to the French Coast. By 1918 there were 20 trains on the home front and 31 trains on the Continent.

Historic railway carriage that in 1919 brought the remains of nurse Edith Cavell and Captain Charles Fryatt from Dover to London Victoria. On 10th November 1920 it carried the coffin of the Unknown Soldier to the capital.
