New Year's Day 2018

Some people take active part and add their photos to the forum thread, as well as attaching the shared description to their image. Many others take the photo and submit it to the site, but don't post to the forum. Others go out for lengthy walks with their cameras and take lots of photos.
I thought I'd bring all these groups together - a total of 103 photographers. I've arranged the images in more or less (map) north to south order and added a brief description where there was none.

Almost certainly we were the first visitors to the Glen Skeuadale Horseshoe above Tarbert on New Years Day. A day of vicious wintry showers and the rainbow shows that one is approaching fast.

A beautiful midday for New Year's Day. An opportunity to walk a field edge not walked before but close to home. Our dog had run off and I was on the trail. When I recover the dog's GPS data from her collar I will know where she spent the morning of New Year's Day.

By the Forth of Tay, about six kilometres east of the Tay Road bridge.
On New Year's Day this section of the massive housing and commercial development at Winchburgh was deserted except for a Polish security guard who opened his window at the dark blue portocabins at right of photo to greet me with a cheery 'Happy New Year' and to chat for several minutes. In the distance is one of the recently completed housing developments.

The bridge is a vital part of the path network that allows walkers to travel from beside McDonald's on the A81, following the burn through the Craigdhu Wedge to Prestonfield. Beyond the bridge there are three options: to turn left - which leads via Seafield Avenue to Mosshead and Kilmardinny Loch; straight on - leading to Heather Avenue (passing Mosshead Primary School); or turn right and continue following the burn to Prestonfield.

View of Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags from Blackford Hill, one of Edinburgh's "seven hills," south of the city centre.
Blackford Hill (164 m, 539 ft) is home to the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh University's astronomy research group and The Higgs Centre for Innovation operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).
Arthur's Seat is the highest peak in Holyrood Park. It rises to 251 m (823ft) and gives panoramic views over the city of Edinburgh. It is most easily climbed from the east. Geologically the hill is the remnant of a 350 million year old volcano. Salisbury Crags are the remnants of a sill.

The cottages at Linton back on to a sort of village green. Their front elevations are on the B6436 road. The EXIF data shows that this was taken at 13.01, but the camera date is still on BST so it was 12.01 GMT, close enough to be part of the New Year's Day midday collection.
