East

The Eastern Region comprising East Anglia with Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire is overwhelmingly dominated by Conservative seats with 52 Conservatives, 4 Labour and 1 Liberal Democrat.

Cambridge

Cambridge only has one constituency. Overall the City has done well economically and has two universities (one slightly more famous than the other). Unemployment is below 1%, but high house prices and many highly skilled jobs create a social divide ‘Town and Gown’ is the classic version of this, but the Science Park businesses and Arm would probably be seen partly on the Gown side). Being a statistical outlier on bike use, there is a continual them-and-us debate between car drivers and cyclists and everyone hates the tourists (probably including some people whose job relies on them) but the University and high-skilled jobs ensure a wide diversity of nationalities.

Labour regained the seat from the Liberal Democrats in 2015. UKIP don’t really get a look in in Cambridge, in contrast to the rural Fens.

South West Hertfordshire

South West Hertfordshire was created as a UK constituency in 1950, and has returned a Conservative MP ever since, the Tories usually polling 50% +/- 5% of the vote.
The constituency forms a narrow strip along the southwestern boundary of the county of Hertfordshire. This area contains a substantial amount of rural countryside and a few medium-sized towns, notably Rickmansworth, Berkhamsted and Tring.
The electorate in December 2010 was 78,269 and the current MP is David Gauke (Con.) who had a majority of 14,920 on 54.2% of the vote at the last election.

A run down of the towns and villages within the constituency follows: The order is roughly NW to SE:

Aldbury, Wigginton, Berkhamsted, Bovingdon

Flaunden, Chipperfield, Northchurch, Tring

Ashridge, Chorleywood, Croxley Green, Maple Cross

Moor Park, Rickmansworth

East Midlands

The forty-six seats are split with 32 Conservative and 14 Labour. The Labour seats are mainly in the cities of Derby, Nottingham and Leicester.

Derbyshire Dales

The large constituency takes in the rural western side of the county with the towns of Ashbourne in the south, Matlock and Bakewell. Smaller settlements include Crich, Tideswell and Froggatt. The seat lies mainly within the limestone White Peak area giving way in the northern fringe to the gritstone of the Dark Peak. The seat and its predecessor have been safely Conservative.

Grantham and Stamford

Grantham and Stamford are both historic towns on the former Great North Road who have lost their large employment bases in Engineering. The constituency is large and rural, though extensive housing development throughout has filled it with commuters who often have to work outside the constituency, something the district of South Kesteven is struggling with as the infrastructure isn't there. This is foxhunting territory, and the boundary changes that converted Stamford and Spalding into two very different constituencies mean neither is ever likely to swing to the left.

Villages

High Peak

The most northerly Derbyshire constituency mainly within or bordering the Peak District. The centres of population, Glossop, New Mills in the north, Chapel-en-Frith in the centre and Buxton in the south are linked by rail to Manchester. The east is more rural with poorer traffic connections to Castleton, Edale and Hope more linked to Sheffield. The Conservatives took the seat from Labour in 2010.

Newark

A sprawling Nottinghamshire constituency with main population centres at Newark, Southwell and Bingham. The remainder of the constituency is rural extending to the north along the A1 to the edge of Retford. A safe Conservative seat that at the height of UKIP popularity at a by-election in 2014 saw the UKIP vote rise to 26% though this dropped to 12% a year later.
