Montford Bridge to Shrewsbury

[map SJ 4315]

Montford Bridge with its three red sandstone arches was completed in 1792 to a design by Thomas Telford. This is thought to be his first bridge design. As we progress south through the county we will encounter some more of his work.

The modern bypass bridge built in 1992 carries the A5 dual carriageway and removed the trunk road traffic from Montford Bridge.

The River Perry joins the River Severn from the north in the meanders immediately downstream of Montford Bridge. The river rises around Oswestry and has a 180km2 predominantly sandstone catchment.
