The original function of this canal was to bring goods from the docks at Liverpool to various places in Lancashire and Yorkshire. Most significant would have been the raw cotton and wool for processing in the mills and finished goods to Liverpool for export. It was also used to carry stone from the limestone quarries in the Skipton area. The first section from Skipton to Bingley opened in 1773, but it took another 46 years to complete it.

The modern distance between these 2 cities via the M62 is only 72 miles – 55 miles shorter than the canal.

This article tries to follow these guidelines
1)The route includes a photograph of the canal in every grid square that it passes through. Squares with only a small section of canal may be omitted.
2)If we reach a square with no photo, then we will wait until one has been posted.
3) The squares are in sequence starting from Leeds (because I live there)
4) If there are several photos of the canal in a square, we may include several of them, preferably in sequence within the square.
5) Photos of nearby points of interest may be included, provided they are within 500m of the canal.
6) We may include diversions into basins, side canals and feeder reservoirs.
