A tour around this interesting walled garden

At just under one acre in extent the walled garden of Silverburn park is about three-quarters formal gardens and one-quarter woodland walk. Silverburn park was previously known as the Silverburn Estate and belonged to the Russell family - a prominent family in the area who co-owned and managed the Tullis-Russell papermaking facility in the Fife town of Markinch. The estate was gifted to the local authority by the family in 1973 and has become a much-valued leisure amenity for the area with extensive woodland walks and access to the long, sandy beaches between Leven and Lundin Links. The walled garden reflects the family's interest in botany and contains specimens of plants which are unusual in Scotland.

The garden (and the park in general) is a haven for wildlife with many species of birds and mammals in abundance. Otters, badgers, deer, birds of prey and seabirds of many species can be found within the park and occasionally within the walled garden itself making it a wonderful place to spend an hour or two. The garden has secluded areas where it is possible to sit quietly and let oneself be approached by a cheeky little robin or sparrow on the lookout for titbits or a grey squirrel wondering what's for lunch.

NO3901 : Grey squirrel by Bill Kasman
This eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) was in the Walled Garden of Silverburn Park, near Leven, where they are common. The grey squirrel is not a native of the UK but is an introduced species. They carry a disease called 'Squirrel Pox' to which they are immune but which kills the UK's native red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) and as a result are now the dominant squirrel species in the UK.
