Weybread, Lucks Mill |
IP21 5UH |
River Waveney |
[map TM 2254 8053] | The bridge is in the foreground and has a concrete pad over it which has started to break-up. It was once part of Lucks Mill. The mill was small and only had two pairs of stones. It stood on a cut south of the River Waveney. The tracks that led to the mill have all disappeared apart from the one coming in from Needham High Road. Luck's Mill was originally a flax mill and that it had ceased working about 1890. The two arched bridge over the old watercourse has been allowed to silt up and holds very little water. Weybread, Middle Mill |
IP21 5UE |
River Waveney |
[map TM 2410 8191] | Weybread watermill stood near this spot on the Norfolk side of the River Waveney until the mill's life came to an abrupt end when it was burnt down on the evening of Friday 6th February 1920. Nothing remains of the mill itself but the installations in the watercourse remain as a reminder of the past. |
Weybread Upper Mill* (aka Needham Mill) |
IP20 9LE |
River Waveney |
[map TM 22908 81132] | Needham Mill was built as a small 4 storey red brick building laid with Flemish bond and roofed with blue tiles, that actually stood in the parish of Weybread on the Suffolk side of the River Waveney. The mill was rebuilt after the fire of 1838 and again about 1870 after a fire destroyed the earlier timber framed weatherboarded building. Milling ceased around 1934 and the wheel and machinery were removed during the second world war and sold towards the war effort. It has been a private residence for many years. |

Wortwell Mill* aka Limbourne Mill |
IP20 0EL |
River Waveney |
[map TM 28178 84450] | Wortwell mill is actually in the manor of Limbourne, a hamlet of Homersfield. It was built of weatherboard over a brick base with a pantiled roof that also houses the lucum to the front. The mill house is joined to the mill on the southern, Suffolk side of the river and are Grade II listed. The mill ceased working c.1948 and although the waterwheel had gone by 1972, some machinery still remained including the cast iron pit wheel. |
Grateful thanks to Norfolk Mills website where more information is available on some of the mills
