A day trip to London

By Chris Allen

Having discovered that the steam tug Portwey TQ3778 : The River Thames from the Isle of Dogs by Chris Allen was offering public trips on the Thames, I booked four places and our party departed Worcester at 0730 to catch the 1100 sailing. Portwey is a twin screw coal fired tug and a ride was a very special experience. This was heightened by the trip under Tower Bridge TQ3380 : Just gone under Tower Bridge by Chris Allen and past HMS Belfast TQ3380 : HMS Belfast, London by Chris Allen. After two hours or so we disembarked and saw a couple of items of interest on the Isle of Dogs TQ3778 : Millwall Docks - chimney and vacuum pump. by Chris Allen TQ3779 : Former Millwall Docks entrance by Chris Allen and were surprised by the passage of another historic vessel - TQ3779 : River Thames from the former Millwall Dock entrance by Chris Allen.

Following this we made a trip to Markfield road Pumping station, Tottenham TQ3488 : Markfield Road Pumping Station by Chris Allen to see the beam engine's new colour scheme TQ3488 : Markfield road Pumping Station by Chris Allen. Sadly it was not in steam due to boiler problems. We then just had to battle our way back out of London.

Everybody agreed that it had been a special day - chance to ride steamships in steam are not all that common (usual suspects - Waverley etc - excluded).
