2011 - The Final Two Months

By Chris Allen

My last entry concluded October with a Sunday trip to Derbyshire but I have kept up the pace and feel it is time to close out the old year with a blog.

November started with a Saturday afternoon visit to the Forge Mill needle museum in Redditch - a site visited only once before and never photographed. This was adequately addressed - SP0468 : Forge Mill Needle Museum by Chris Allen SP0468 : Forge Mill Needle Museum - waterwheel by Chris Allen SP0468 : Forge Mill Needle Museum - scouring runners by Chris Allen SP0468 : Forge Mill Needle Museum - the barrelling shop by Chris Allen. The following day was a trip to Derbyshire with my sister and was pretty but largely non-industrial - SK2565 : Former Rowsley Railway Station by Chris Allen SK2066 : Lathkil Hotel - Over Haddon by Chris Allen SK2066 : Me and my shadow by Chris Allen

On the 9th of November work was interrupted by a false fire alarm and the opportunity to photograph fire engines - SO8754 : Where's the fire? (1) by Chris Allen SO8754 : Where's the fire? (2) by Chris Allen

After that excitement we spent the weekend of 12th and 13th with friends in a caravan in Wales. A few appropriate photographs were garnered - SN4562 : Aberaeron - looking towards the harbour mouth by Chris Allen SN5881 : Malt house and kiln, Aberystwyth by Chris Allen SN5780 : Surf's up! by Chris Allen SN5781 : Climbing the sea wall (2) by Chris Allen SN5780 : Having a quick drag by Chris Allen SN3960 : Crabbing on the jetty, New Quay by Chris Allen.

On the 18th of November I was honoured to attend an Engineering Heritage Award ceremony at the Alstom works in Rugby where the Institute of Mechanical Engineers gave an award to an important reciprocating steam engine - SP4975 : Alstom, Rugby - Engineering Heritage Award by Chris Allen.

Sunday the 20th saw the last open day at the British Engineerium in Hove for some time to come. It was decided that a trip was essential and the round trip was more or less 400 miles. Nonetheless, it was well worth it - TQ2806 : The Engineerium - 1875 beam engine by Chris Allen TQ2806 : The Engineerium - mesmerised by Chris Allen TQ2806 : The Engineerium - boiler house by Chris Allen

The 26th and 27th of November were spent in Devon and a few mills were photographed - SX9788 : Fisher's Bridge Mills, Clyst St George by Chris Allen SX9897 : Clyston Watermill by Chris Allen ST0207 : Lower Mill, Cullompton by Chris Allen, including my first PotY shortlisting for a few weeks - SX9996 : Cliston Manor Windmill by Chris Allen.

The first weekend of December saw a Sunday with a couple of the usual gang and we collected Ashley Dace from his accommodation to act as our guide for the morning. The day was finished with a trip to Nottingham Industrial Museum at Wollaton Park so that I could get some photos for my beam engine gallery - SK5339 : Nottingham Industrial Museum - ploughing engine by Chris Allen SK5339 : Nottingham Industrial Museum - beam engine by Chris Allen.
