 2007  2008House in Broad Walk, Winchmore Hill, N.21, which has now been demolished. If you look at the lamppost you will see where the house was.  2001Houses at Birling Gap, East Sussex. I understand that more of these houses have been lost.  1923  1999The Red House, 64 Burntwood Lane, London, S.W.17. This house was demolished in the 1930s and a block of Art Deco Style flats was constructed on the site, see second photo.  1980  2003Broomfield House, Palmers Green, London N.13. The house was destroyed by fire, the first in 1984 with a further fire in 1994 which caused more damage.  1971  2008Avenue of Elm Trees, which used to lead to Broomfield House, Palmers Green, London N.13, which sadly fell victim to Duch Elm Disease.  1999  2004Temple Bar, Theobalds Park, Cheshunt. The first image shows Temple Bar as it was for many years after being removed from Temple, London. It was taken down stone by stone and restored and is now in the new Paternoster Square near St Paul's, completely restored as you can see in the second image.  1995 still attached to the land  1996  2004  2006  2008The West Pier, Brighton. Very little of this pier is now left.  1996  2006 The Ryde Queen Paddle Steamer is moored in the Medina River, Isle of Wight. I understand that the funnel has now collapsed.  1998  2008Brick built pillar box in Lonsdale Drive, Enfield, near junction with World's End Lane. This pillar box has now been replaced by a large round box to accommodate the additional post from the new houses in the area.  1999The South London Hospital for Women, Clapham Common South Side was entirely staffed by women. The hospital was founded in 1912 and opened by Queen Mary on July 4th 1916. It was enlarged in the 1930s and closed down in 1984. Currently it is being demolished to make way for a superstore and residential development.  2002  2008Administrative block at Chase Farm Hospital. This has now been demolished to make way for housing, as seen in Enders Close image taken from more or less the same spot.  2005Lacey Hall, Hazelwood Lane, Palmers Green. I understand this has now been demolished to make way for housing.  1973Elm tree on north side of lake in Trent Country Park. Sadly there are no elm trees left as they all succumbed to Duth Elm Disease - the landscape looks quite different without them.  1969  2007Trent Park, London, N.14 Not exactly same viewpoint as from across the road, but near enough.  1991  2007The Grove Care Home, Chase Road, London, N.14. Apartment block now on the site.  March 1986  May 2009No. 38 Bishopsgate as seen from Threadneedle Street. Opened by HM The Queen in March 1986 as new headquarters of Standard Chartered Bank. It has now been demolished and the tallest building in London is apparently going to be constructed on the site. How times change. When the Standard Chartered building was constructed it was not permitted to accommodate more people than the two buildings it replaced, which were the former buildings of The Chartered Bank and The Eastern Bank with an archway over the alleyway leading to Crosby Square, which was a public right of way that had to be incorporated in the new building by means of a walkway through the atrium. |

Collieries that are no more. This is not comprehensive but it's a start. This list does not include the several museum sites or disused standing buildings. Cardowan Colliery, Stepps. One winding engine preserved at Summerlee. Murton Pit. The tall square building at NZ 403 474 was commissioned in 1923 and was an early use of a tower mounted Koepe winder - the first in the UK was 1914.Leigh in Lancashire had two pits surviving in to the 1980s at Bickershaw  and Parsonage  . Golborne Colliery  was part of the same complex of mines.In Yorkshire there were very many pits, including Askern Main  , Walton  , Hickleton  , Markham Main  , Fryston  and Orgreave  . The latter was the site of some notable confrontations during the miners' strike of 1984.One of the South Derbyshire pits was Cadley Hill Colliery  A couple of the Nottinghamshire pits were Linby  and Bentinck  .Staffordshire included Littleton Colliery  , Hem Heath  and Silverdale  .There was a small coalfield in north-west Wales and the last pit was Point of Ayr Colliery  . South Wales included Nixon's Navigation/Deep Duffryn  , Deep Navigation  , Britannia  , Celynen North  , Six Bells  and Morlais  . Two winding/haulage engines from the latter survive at Cefn Coed and Kidwelly Industrial Museum.There are a few that I haven't yet scanned and I will so do one day. |
