Cistercian Abbeys in Britain

The Cistercian order originated in Burgundy in1098. Twenty years later they established their first monastery in Britain at Waverley in Surrey. In due course they established 62 foundations in England, 13 in Wales and 11 in Scotland. The history and architecture of these abbeys are described in The Cistercian Abbeys of Britain ed.David Robinson This book also contains a gazetteer of all these sites. There were further foundations in Ireland which could be the subject of another article. However, based upon the gazetteer in the book I have searched Geograph for images of these abbeys. It is surprising how many of these remains still dominate our landscape: Tintern in Wales, Melrose in Scotland, Fountains and Rievaulx in Yorkshire are among the largest remaining ruins and some of the best known. At the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537 -40 many of the sites were sold off to gentry who later "quarried" the ancient building stone to build themselves stately homes. I have divided this article in to three sections. Firstly, sites where there are still extant remains of these medieval buildings. Secondly, where the site of the abbey is still marked by a more recent building using some of the material from the original buildings Thirdly, sites where there are "earthworks" or lesser evidence of the abbey. There are twelve sites with nothing remaining at all although there may be archaeological evidence. I provide grid references for these sites (from the reference quoted) so that others may add images of the 21st century landscape surrounding these sites, which in the Cistercian ideal were "Far from the Concourse of Men" Sites with significant remains ![]() Aberconwy subsequently moved to ![]() ![]() Balermino ![]() Basingwerk ![]() Beaulieu ![]() Bordesley ![]() ![]() Buildwas ![]() ![]() Byland ![]() Calder ![]() ![]() Cleeve ![]() Coggeshall ![]() ![]() Coupar Angus ![]() ![]() Croxden ![]() ![]() Culross ![]() ![]() Cymhir ![]() Cymer ![]() ![]() Deer ![]() ![]() Dore ![]() ![]() Dundrennan ![]() Dunkeswell ![]() ![]() Forde ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fountains ![]() Furness ![]() ![]() Glenluce ![]() Hailes ![]() Holmcultram ![]() ![]() Jervaulx ![]() Kinloss ![]() ![]() ![]() Kirkstall ![]() ![]() Kirkstead ![]() ![]() Margam ![]() ![]() ![]() Melrose ![]() ![]() Neath ![]() ![]() ![]() Netley ![]() Newminster ![]() Quarr ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rievaulx ![]() Robertsbridge ![]() Roche ![]() ![]() ![]() Rufford ![]() ![]() ![]() Saddell ![]() ![]() Sawley ![]() ![]() Sibton ![]() ![]() Strata Florida ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sweetheaart ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tintern ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Valle Crucis ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Waverley ![]() Whalley The site of the abbey is still marked by a more recent building using some of the material from the original buildings ![]() Biddlesden ![]() Bindon ![]() Bruern ![]() Buckfast ![]() Buckland ![]() Coombe ![]() Combermere ![]() Flaxley ![]() Medmenham ![]() ![]() Merevale ![]() Newbattle ![]() Stoneleigh ![]() Vale Royal ![]() Warden ![]() ![]() Whitland ![]() Woburn there are "earthworks" or lesser evidence of the abbey ![]() Meaux site of ![]() Newenham site of ![]() Revesby site of ![]() Sawtry site of ![]() Stanley site of ![]() ![]() Strata Marcella ![]() Swineshead site of ![]() Thame site of ![]() Titley site of ![]() Vaudey site of Sites with nothing remaining at all or no relevant Geograph image Boxley TQ7658 Dieulacres SJ9857 Garendon SK5019 Grace Dieu SO4513 Hulton SJ9049 Kingswood ST7492 Llantarnam ST3192 St Mary Graces London TQ3380 Louth Park TF3588 Pipewell SP8485 Rewley SP5006 Stratford Langthorne Greater London TQ3983 |

It may be worth checking out squares TF3588 where there may be earthworks of Louth Park Abbey (according to OS Map); ST7492 Kingswood, where there is an extant Abbey gatehouse (see OS Map); and ST3192 Llantarnam where there is a present day convent in a building which incorporates elements of the medieval abbey. If interested folk near these locations get snapping they could be added to this page in the appropriate place. Thanks. |
