The North Staffordshire Railway This branch joined Stoke-on-Trent to Stockton Brook and Leek, then Caldon Low Quarry. Passenger traffic ended in 1966, and freight in 1988, but does the continued existence of the track mean that Tarmac are paying Network Rail to keep the line mothballed in case of possible future limestone quarry requirements? Nearby, the Churnet Valley Railway operates a preserved section of the original "Owd Knotty". Link Update. In 2010 the line was re-opened from Leekbrook Junction as far as Cauldon Lowe by Moorlands and City Railways. The ChurnetValley Railway run steam trains all the way. Links to Leek, Alton Towers, and Stoke now look ever more likely. Time for another visit, methinks. In the meantime, this video is a pioneering one, and very enjoyable too: Link. If you can run it on your monitor alongside a satellite image of the route on Where's the Path. Also try this. I'll update this page more soon - thanks to the anonymous tip-off that I'd forgotten about it. :-) Want to buy shares in all that? Some images of the section of line between Leekbrook Junction and Caldon Low can be seen below. |

Great Western Railway: Wolverhampton to Stourbridge via Wombourne
The line was begun in 1913 but only completed in 1925. It was originally intended to run the line to Bridgnorth. Between 11th May 1925 and 31st October 1932 a passenger service was operated along this line. The last freight train ran on the 24th June 1965. Today much of it is used for leisure (the South Staffordshire Railway Walk, and Smestow Valley Park near Wolverhampton) and the Wombourne Station building has been turned into a café and information point. Stations: Wolverhampton Low Level, Dunstall Park, Tettenhall, Compton Halt, Penn Halt, Bratch (Wombourne), Himley, Gornal, Pensnett, Bromley, Brockmoor, Brettell Lane, Stourbridge Junction. For four very useful and informative references, try the book "The Railway to Wombourne" by Ned Williams, and these links: Smestow Valley Nature Reserve West Midlands Railway History South Staffordshire Railway Walk |

Cambridge to St. Ives, closed to passenger traffic in 1970.
These photos are already becoming historical records in their own right, as the route is being concreted over to form a guided busway. |

Scotland Street to Trinity (North British Railway)
Opened 1842 closed 1986 (the line was extended in 1846 and 1847 and sections were closed in 1868 and 1967). I remember walking on the rails between 15 and 20 years ago on the section from Granton to Goldenacre. |
