There are 145 postboxes in the DT6 (Bridport), DT7 (Lyme Regis) and DT8 (Beaminster) postcode districts which are within the county of Dorset, plus seven boxes which come under TA20 (Chard) and one in TA18 (Crewkerne). They are plotted on this map. Being a mainly rural area, there is a fair majority of lamp and wall boxes over pillar boxes. It is perhaps unusual that Edward VII is represented only once in this fairly large area. Standard pillar boxes There are 11 standard-size pillar boxes in the area: One is Victorian: One George V: Six George VI: And three Elizabeth II: Modern pillar boxes There are two more modern pillar boxes - one ‘Type K’ dating from 1980 onwards, and one more recent design specifically for interior settings: Large pillar box There is one, an Elizabeth II-reign one: Double-aperture pillar box There is one of these - again, Elizabeth II: Wall boxes There are 66 boxes, of whatever design, set into a brick structure. One is incorporated into the fabric of Lyme Regis Post Office: Of the others, thirteen are Victorian (the last two set into their own pillar): One is Edward VII: 19 are George V (the first a large one; the last four set into their own pillar): Twelve are George VI (the first four are lamp-box designs including one earlier arched one; the last two are set into their own pillar): And 20 are Elizabeth II (again, the first four are a lamp boxes; the last eight are set into their own pillar): |

Lamp boxes Firstly, there is one ‘Type M’ box - a modern alternative design for the lamp box: And there are 63 lamp boxes (excluding those set into walls and illustrated above), designed to be strapped to lampposts and the like, but more usually nowadays found mounted on a pole. Three are of an earlier design with an arched or rounded top (two George V and a George VI): …and the remaining 60 are of the familiar squareish design. Two George VI, one on a wooden post and one on a metal pole: And of the remaining 58 Elizabeth II specimens, two are strapped to a telegraph pole: Eight to a wooden post: One is sat on a wall: One is so hidden in a hedge that its fixture is unclear: And the remaining 46 are mounted on a metal pole: =========================================== Finally, we should just mention these two boxes, which miss out on the list by being - literally by a few yards - over the border at Chard Junction (Somerset) and Blackpool Corner (Devon). |
