There are 117 postboxes in the BH19 (Swanage) and BH20 (Wareham) postcode districts, although two have no public access (one at Bovington Camp and one at Lulworth Camp) and are therefore not included here. They are plotted on this map. Being a mainly rural area, there is a fair majority of lamp and wall boxes over pillar boxes. Standard pillar boxes There are 29 standard-size pillar boxes in the area: Two are Victorian and three Edward VII-reign (the first here is an ‘anonymous’ box, made between 1879 and 1887 when no royal cipher was displayed): Eleven George V (the first two of these have a post office direction sign on top) and two George VI: And eleven Elizabeth II: Modern pillar boxes There are five ‘Type K’ boxes, a familiar modern design, and these are by definition all Elizabeth II: Large pillar boxes The area includes three of the fatter version of the pillar box; all are Elizabeth II-reign: Double-aperture pillar box There is one double-aperture box in the area: Wall boxes There are 26 boxes, of whatever design, set into a brick structure. Five are Victorian and two Edward VII (one of the latter a large one): Five are George V-reign: Seven are George VI: And seven are Elizabeth II-reign, including the first three which are lamp boxes set into a wall: Lamp boxes There are 48 lamp boxes, all of the familiar squareish design. Two are of George VI reign: ...and the remaining 46 are Elizabeth II – six strapped to their own wooden post: Three to a telegraph pole: One to a concrete post: And 36 mounted on a metal pole: Business boxes These boxes started appearing in the mid-1990s and are for franked mail only – franked mail cannot be put in ordinary boxes and previously had to be handed in at a post office counter unless the Royal Mail collected from the business. There is one in Swanage and one in Wareham: Incorporated into the fabric of a building Finally, the postbox at the Wareham’s main post office is part of the building: |
