Sea defence renewal, Borth

The renewal of Borth sea defences has been discussed for some years and in 2010 it was finally agreed that a scheme involving the removal of the existing groynes/breakwaters and their replacement by a series of stone groynes and offshore reefs would be implemented.    The original feasibility study was commissioned by Ceredigion Council as long ago as 2oo0. The work is being undertaken by a firm called Bam Nuttall and is proving to be a major piece of engineering. The initial refacing of the existing sea wall took place in the summer of 2010  and then all was quiet for the autumn and winter before work began with a vengeance in 2011  .It is not a scheme without a degree of local controversy and perhaps had everyone been quite aware of the amount of noise, dust, vibration and disruption it is causing, there may have been a significant degree of protest. Phase 1, running from the lifeboat station to the golf club is not due to be completed until November 2011 and it is speculated (Borth community website http://www.borthcommunity.info/index.php?option=com_content&view=artic le&id=43&Itemid=57&lang=en) that extensions to Ynyslas may not be completed for another twenty years. At present (April 2011) there are twice daily unloadings of huge boulders from a barge at high tide, which causes all nearby houses to shake with each drop. If high tide is at night then the drop zone is floodlit and the noise continues through the night. As the tide recedes divisions of giant Tonka toys rearrange the boulders, dig up the beach, drop truckloads of shale and make an unholy noise all day long! In fairness to the contractors, there are restrictions to minimise the inconvenience - trucks are not allowed to drive through the village - and the local pubs are doing a good trade.
