Shetland postboxes

There are a total of 119 postboxes serving the Shetland population. Not all of them, yet, are represented on Geograph but the majority are. Here is a gallery of them. If anybody can add photos of the boxes that are missing from this gallery, I will notice within a couple of days and post them up. SHETLAND MAINLAND (including road-linked islands) Lerwick (ZE1) There are 21 boxes in Lerwick itself. Perhaps the most interesting postbox on the islands is this splendid wooden box in the hospital. ![]() One is within the wall of the town's main post office: ![]() There is a large pillar box at North Ness Industrial Estate, ![]() ... six standard pillar boxes, ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ... one example of the 1980 'Type K' box, ![]() ... and an unusual interior one in a shopping centre. ![]() There are six wall boxes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And four lamp boxes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Also, no longer in service so not included in the 119, a business franked-only box: ![]() |

South to Sumburgh Heading down the A970 (deviating where necessary!), the vast majority of boxes are standard Elizabeth II lamp boxes, although there are a couple of exceptions: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And, to finish, one in the interior wall of Sumburgh Airport: ![]() Southwest to Hamnavoe and Burra This route takes us firstly through Scalloway, which has a pillar box and two wall boxes: ![]() ![]() ![]() ...and one lamp box which sets the scene for the rest of the route: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

THE OTHER ISLANDS Fair Isle; Foula; Out Skerries; Papa Stour These islands have a postbox each; only Skerries is yet on Geograph. [[[to follow; ZE2 104 Fair Isle]]] [[[ZE2 115 Foula]]] ![]() Bressay The one box on Bressay is of a modern design, the 'Type N' box introduced in the mid-1990s. ![]() Whalsay There are two boxes on Whalsay: a large pillar box at Symbister and a lamp box at Brough. ![]() ![]() Yell We'll look at Yell's 14 boxes by going north up the A968 to Gutcher and on to Cullivoe, and then come back down the eastern side of the island. Firstly, an oddity in the wall of Ulsta Post Office, ![]() ... then lamp boxes all the way up to Cullivoe, ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ... and then back down from Mid Yell to Hamnavoe - a large pillar box at Mid Yell Post Office, ![]() ... and four lamp boxes to finish off: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (The last one faces its wall-box predecessor: ![]() Fetlar Fetlar's postbox is outside the post office. ![]() Unst Unst has five postboxes - a lamp box at Uyeasound, ![]() ... a large pillar box outside Baltasound Post Office, ![]() ... two lamp boxes at Haroldswick, ![]() ![]() ... and the UK's northernmost box at Norwick: ![]() |
