River Vyrnwy from above Lake Vyrnwy, Powys to join the River Severn at Crewgreen, Powys The tributaries of the river have their sources in the mountains surrounding Lake Vyrnwy. Lake Vyrnwy was created in the 1880s when a stone built dam was built to provide a source of water for the city of Liverpool supplying up to 50 million gallons a day. A further 5-10 million gallons are released as compensation flow into the River Vyrnwy. The site of the old village of Llanwddyn lies beneath the reservoir and a new village was built below the dam. Flowing from the foot of the dam to Pont Ganol, Pont Logel, the Ford at Rhyd, falls at Dolanog to a confluence with the River Banny at Meifod. Below Llantsantffraid it has a confluence with the Afon Tanat. Beyond Llanymynech the river marks the border with England joining the River Severn near Crewgreen.
