Zennor to St Just
Week 3 – Day 5 – Wednesday 28 April 2010
Distance 12 miles, Ascent 1,600ft (Approx)
A short walk from the village of Zennor brought me back to the coast path above Pendour Cove, also known as Mermaid Cove. Continuing my westward progress, in fact today will be the last day walking west on the coast path, I passed Gurnard’s Head with its Iron Age fort, though didn’t take a diversion onto the headland. I passed a number of rocky coves and zawns, including Porthmeor Cove with its sandy beach. Negotiating the ups and downs of this rocky coast, I gained glimpses of Pendeen Watch and its lighthouse, slowly getting nearer. Of particular interest today were the remains of mining activity at Levant Mine; a fascinating site of industrial heritage. Cape Cornwall, a prominent headland comes into view as I continue along the coast, now walking in a southerly direction. Traditionally Cape Cornwall was thought to be the most westerly point in England, but now Land’s End has been confirmed by surveying to hold that status, as a consequence it draws the crowds. Soon after visiting the Cape Cornwall Chimney on the headland and leaving Cape Cornwall, I walked inland up Cot Valley to St Just youth hostel where I was staying for the night.
