Geo-Trips :: Salisbury to Canterbury (15)
Romney Marsh
A walk from Rye, Mon, 29 Apr 2013 by Chris Heaton
preceding leg | This trip is part of a series. |
Rye turned out to be a splendid place to explore - but we could not tarry too long, as Canterbury was still a long way off.
The 1066 Country Walk finishes at Rye. Our route now took us beside the Royal Military Canal, which we followed for several miles as far as Stone Bridge, passing into the county of Kent in the process.
From here we struck off onto the wide featureless and monotonously flat landscape of Romney Marsh on pasture, crossing water channels and narrow lanes.
We passed through Fairfield and Snargate - tiny communties, otherwise it was a lonely walk.
Our route eventually drew back to the Royal Military Canal, which was crossed to reach Hamstreet. Accommodation was at a premium in these parts, so we were obliged to take a train to Ashford.
Distance:- 11.5 miles
