Geo-Trips :: Around the hills south of Newtown

Newtown

A cycle ride from Newtown, Sat, 9 Jul 2022 by Richard Law

A bike ride around the hills to the south of Newtown in mid Wales with my brother. Starting innocuously enough in the town, it soon steepens into a long climb up the lanes through Graig and Dolfor as far as The Cider House, from where there's a very scenic road directly southwards across Gorddwr moor, and down into Llanbadarn Ffynydd. After following the main A483 mid Wales road for a few miles, we turned off westwards at Gwynant and up to Bryn Dadlau, which is a convenient access point into the turbines of the Penrhyddlan and Llidiartywaun windfarm, from where a non-existent bridleway took us out to the trig on Waun Hir, then a fast descent track and road into Llandinam. The batteries on my GPS had given up the ghost by this point, and we were both in need of refreshment in Caersws, where my brother's ex-partner lives, so that's why there are no photos of the route back along the main roads from Llandinam to Newtown - we just chain-ganged back at a good lick. A warm summer day out; highly satisfying.

Click the blue circles to see a photograph taken from that spot and read further information about the location. The blue lines indicate the direction of view. There is also a slideshow of this trip. ( )
