Geo-Trips :: Ascent of the south ridge of Yr Wyddfa

Snowdon

A walk from Rhyd Ddu, Tue, 21 Mar 2000 by Nigel Brown

The south ridge of Snowdon is an excellent way of getting up this mountain, and usually free of the hordes which engulf it. I'd attempted it in a howling gale a couple of years before, in benign temperatures in spite of the wind, but, at the point where I decided it was time to turn back, I turned and the wind whacked a loose rucksack strap into me right eye. I made it down OK, the eye seeming not too bad, but complications gave me problems for several months afterwards; I now take care not to have loose straps flying around!

It was a mild but rather dull day on this occasion. I found the path up the ridge from the col below Yr Aran had been nicely upgraded, and gave a relaxed stroll to the top, with splendid views all around. And no hordes!

By the way, the apparent duplication of some pics is due to the fact that I was taking both film and digital pics, and put up some film pics before realising, some time later, that the digital ones were somewhat better.

Click the blue circles to see a photograph taken from that spot and read further information about the location. The blue lines indicate the direction of view. There is also a slideshow of this trip. ( )
