TL4685 : Lock at Welches Dam

taken 17 years ago, near to Welches Dam, Cambridgeshire, England

Lock at Welches Dam
Lock at Welches Dam
Welches Dam lock connects the Forty Foot, or Vermuyden's, Drain with the Old Bedford River. Although the greater part of the Forty Foot drain and the rest of the Middle Level system are navigable, the section between Welches Dam and Horseway has been closed by the Environment Agency due to structural defects in Welches Dam lock. The photograph shows how the entrance to the lock has been stanked off and the bed of the Forty Foot is rapidly turning into a reed-bed.
