taken 15 years ago, near to Longtown, Cumbria, England

River Esk at Longtown
River Esk at Longtown
The river is in spate after heavy rain. The photo was taken just downstream from the 18th century bridge. Longtown has a somewhat turbulent history, being very close to the Scottish border. The area was often raided for cattle and other goods by the Border Reivers. Longtown has the largest sheep market in England.
