View from the Pulpit
This is the view from the top of Pulpit Rock towards the Trinity House obelisk at Portland Bill. The seven metre tall white stone obelisk was built in 1844 at the southern tip of Portland Bill as a warning of a low shelf of rock extending 30 metres south into the sea. It was saved from threatened demolition in 2002. Pulpit Rock (underfoot) was left by the removal of a natural arch at the Bill Quarry in the 1870s. It is possible (but not always advisable) to climb up onto the Rock using toe-holes that have been cut into the steeply sloping stone slab on its eastern side.
