In the mid 1950's, to the left was the boiling room, not for central heating for the house but where food was prepared for the animals, mostly the pigs. The middle door led to the byre and it was the milking parlour. Cows were kept in during the harsher winter months that we used to have. Farmers were very enterprising as not only did they farm, but they were a mixture of builders, engineers, vets and could turn their hand to practically anything. The door to the right was the room that held the batteries that stored the electricity. They were ex government stock, (possibly from a submarine). From memory, the generator was across the street. It was a real effort to get the diesel plant going, you had to wind a big clumsy wheel and when it was going fast enough, you pulled a lever and it chugged into action. It just ran at night, basically for the milking and to charge the batteries. When it went off, it was pitch black and you had to use a torch to see. Prior to that, Tilley Storm Lamps were used in the house. To the very right was one of the pig craws. One of the tasks that I remember undertaking was to brush the dirt from the yard with the besom.
