Donegal: "Blue Stack Mountains Air Crash"
On the stormy night of 31 January 1944 at 23:45 hrs, a British flying boat crashed into the Blue Stack Mountains in Co. Donegal with the loss of seven lives. Five men survived the crash. Because of bad weather, the plane, from Pembroke Dock in South Wales, which was on anti-submarine patrol off the coast of France, was diverted to Castle Archdale in Lough Erne, Northern Ireland. The crash was the result of several factors: bad weather, miscalculation and the inability to get some radio fixes.
